Genre: Science Fiction, Romance, Paranormal, YA
A smuggler running from her past, Mercy desperately wants answers to her mother’s disappearance. All roads lead her to the one place she can’t return: home. Killers. Thieves. Pirates. Family. Mercy has spent her life evading the Pirate Queen who attempted to murder her as a child. Now, living as a smuggler with the outlawed Talent of telepathy, she keeps her head down, takes jobs that keep her moving, and searches for answers about her mother’s disappearance fifteen years ago. But living outside the law has consequences. Tricked and captured, Mercy must choose between two rival factions: the terrorists who will do anything to exploit her gifts for themselves, and the pirates she’s been eluding since childhood. Her only ally is the most dangerous killer of them all, and trusting him may be her final mistake. Star Wars meets Firefly in this space fantasy series readers compare to Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh.
I received a free copy for an honest review. My biggest problem in the book is the portrayal of the protagonist, Mercy. Mercy is the EXTREMELY cliched YA heroine who is always kind, brave, bad-ass, and "didn't want the power". This bugs me a lot because I'm so sick of the trope in fictional works where the protagonist "didn't ask for" this amazing power, and "doesn't want this". I personally think that this trope is way too overused and is quite unrealistic because I really can't relate to any character or real life person who would not be at least a little bit awed by the amazing power that they "unknowingly" possess.
But aside from this, other things are all really enjoyable. Reaper is an amazing character (who is super flushed out) and is the perfect partner to Mercy. The story-line is also really interesting and the whole concept of the "talented" and how their society works (can't get too much into it because of spoilers) is also pretty creative and interesting. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in a pretty standard YA book with a really interesting romantic interest, as well as psychic abilities mixed with science fiction elements.
about the author
Carysa Locke is a pseudonym. Carysa loves to write, and she and her best friend, MaLea Holt, have been creating imaginary worlds together for more than twenty years. Carysa writes the books while MaLea creates the worlds and often runs roleplay games in them. Carysa has a degree in English, and another in teaching, but she'd rather spend time writing wonderful stories and sharing them with readers, and MaLea helps support families with special needs children. Their obsession with pirates and adventure goes back many years, when they started another hobby together - costuming. They regularly attend Ren-faires and Pirate Festivals. They currently reside in the Pacific Northwest with their families, where they still routinely roleplay and costume together.
